What Nitric Oxide Does Beyond Any Memodyne Formula

Nitric oxide is a gas, and a signalling molecule. Produced by endothelial cells lining blood vessels, it diffuses into the surrounding smooth muscle and triggers relaxation, allowing the vessel to widen and blood to flow more easily.

Its identification as the endothelium-derived relaxing factor earned the 1998 Nobel Prize. It is also the mechanism behind nitrate medications used in angina, and understanding it led to several drug classes.

The enzyme that produces it, nitric oxide synthase, uses L-arginine as its substrate. That single fact is the entire basis of the arginine and citrulline supplement category.

The Absorption Problem Memodyne Works Around

Here is where the mechanism and the supplement part company, and it is worth understanding because it explains why serious formulas are built the way they are.

Oral arginine is substantially broken down before it reaches general circulation. The gut wall and liver metabolise a large proportion of it — first-pass metabolism — which means swallowing arginine raises plasma arginine far less efficiently than the mechanism would suggest.

Citrulline solves this. It largely escapes first-pass metabolism, reaches the kidneys, and is converted there into arginine. The counterintuitive result, reasonably well replicated: oral citrulline raises plasma arginine more effectively than oral arginine does.

A formula including both arginine and citrulline forms — as Memodyne does — is working around this problem rather than ignoring it.

What the Research Supports, and What Memodyne Cannot Claim

Citrulline and arginine supplementation have been studied for exercise performance, blood pressure and vascular function. Findings are strongest for vascular measures and endurance, and generally more pronounced in people with existing vascular impairment than in healthy adults.

Two caveats matter for cognitive products. First, most of this research is systemic rather than cerebral — measuring blood pressure or exercise capacity, not brain blood flow. Second, studies showing effects typically used substantial daily amounts, often several grams.

A single daily capsule containing six ingredients has finite space. Where amounts are not published, as with Memodyne, no comparison to studied intakes is possible.

The Safety Point That Applies to Memodyne and Similar Formulas

This one is genuinely important rather than boilerplate.

If a supplement supports vasodilation, it acts on the same system as several classes of medication — blood pressure drugs, nitrates and PDE5 inhibitors among them. Combining them can produce additive effects.
